How to place idols in the pooja room

Hi,

I live in a apartment in USA. hence I don't have much choices to keep the pooja room. To which direction should the photos face to ?

my convenient places:

1. idols facing South-East
2. idols facing North- East

Also please tell me in which direction I should NOT keep the idols to ?
